RSA vs RSG: what's the difference?

Updated 9 June 2026

If you're starting in hospitality you may hear about both RSA and RSG. They're separate certificates that cover different responsibilities.

RSA — Responsible Service of Alcohol

Required for serving or selling alcohol. It focuses on intoxication, refusing service, and your obligations under liquor law.

RSG — Responsible Service of Gambling

Required where gaming machines, TAB, Keno or wagering are offered. It focuses on recognising problem gambling and responding appropriately.

Which do you need?

It depends on the role and venue — some workers need both. Check your state's requirements and what your employer asks for.
